How Volumetric Concrete is a Perfect Solution for Headley Construction Group

Concrete On Demand: A Conversation with Tom Headley

Headley Construction is making waves in Miami-Dade, proving that the right equipment can change the trajectory of a business. We sat down with owner Tom Headley to talk about bus stops, night pours, and why dependability matters.

The History

Bay-Lynx: Tom, give us a little history lesson on the business. Where did you start, and what does Headley Construction look like today?
Tom Headley: I was a paving contractor originally, but for the last eight years, we’ve focused more on concrete—flatwork, curbs, sidewalks, and things like footers for bus stops. We’ve had Headley Construction going strong since 2019. Our customer base is a mix; we do residential driveways and pool patios, but right now, we’re doing an ongoing contract with Miami-Dade to renovate all their bus stops. We go all through Miami excavating and doing reinforced slabs, so having the volumetric truck really helps us out going from location to location.

The Move to Volumetric

Bay-Lynx: What was the specific reason you decided to leave the “Ready-Mix” world behind for a Volumetric Mixer?
Tom: For us, having concrete on demand is very important. When we move locations, the ready-mix plants don’t really like doing that. Plus, you only have a timeframe of about 90 minutes to pour a truck. The volumetric truck gives us opportunities – we can jump from location to location without having to fight a 90 minute clock, or bring another truck. That allows our guys to work comfortably and finish the concrete with enough time.
Bay-Lynx: Has that flexibility actually helped your bottom line?
Tom: Definitely! Not having to have all these short loads has been huge. Before, scheduling was a pain point. Now we have two Bay-Lynx trucks, so we have concrete on demand on whatever job site we need. Sometimes we work in different counties where we don’t have an account with a local provider, but now we just send our own truck. It has really, really helped us a lot. Concrete on demand has definitely added to our bottom line.

The Night Shift

Bay-Lynx: You mentioned the ability to do night work. How has that changed things?
Tom: That’s a big one. As most know, ready-mix doesn’t like opening a plant at night—or if they do, it’s going to cost you a lot. Being able to do your own pours at night is fantastic. It reduces our costs and the timeframe of getting the job done.

The Bay-Lynx Experience

Bay-Lynx: What made you go with Bay-Lynx over a different manufacturer?
Tom: The professionalism from start to finish. You guys have always been there when we call with technical questions or concrete mix design questions. When we spoke over the phone, the guys were very professional and prompt to respond. We were new to volumetrics and had a lot of questions, but we made our decision pretty quick because of that.
Bay-Lynx: You have both older trucks and the new Titan model. What are your favorite differences?
Tom: Bay-Lynx is just dependable. We’ve never had any issues with the mixer—it’s very easy to work on and very user-friendly. We’ve seen competitors, and they’re way more difficult to understand and figure out. Our mechanics figured out the maintenance and the system immediately.
On this new truck, being able to remotely see what is going on at the job site has been a game-changer. That feature has been awesome.

The Future

Bay-Lynx: What’s the plan for Headley Construction moving forward?
Tom: Our plan is to increase production and increase the amount of trucks in our fleet. We’re very happy and at a stable point right now, but I can see us purchasing more from Bay-Lynx in the near future as we grow and provide concrete to other contractors.
Bay-Lynx: Any final thoughts on the team?
Tom: The team has been fantastic. From the moment I called, Tom answered immediately and we were on the same page. Arthur has been great too—any questions we have, he answers on the spot. We keep in contact with him as we learn more about the trucks. I’m super happy with it.
