How to keep concrete from frost cracking | Tips to keep away cold weather failures

Why your concrete is cracking in cold weather, and how to fix it.

Everyone has seen the effects of temperature fluctuations from freezing and thawing on concrete slabs, driveways, and roads. In fact, concrete cracking over time is often overlooked and treated as normal, especially in areas that are prone to severe wear and tear. However, there are a number of reasons this happens, as well as actions you can take to avoid it. Managing your pours correctly means fewer calls for re-work once the frost hits.

Use air entrainer

 

Tip 1: Using Air Entrainment

Air pockets are found in most types of concrete. When mixed correctly, concrete has tiny, abundant “bubbles” of air trapped in-between the aggregates. Volumetric mixers are naturally better at entraining air into a mix compared to a traditional drum truck, which allows the mixing process to compound over time, which can actually lower the air content by the time it’s ready to pour. Fresh concrete with good air content is homogeneous and uniform, retaining a “creamy” texture. On a volumetric mixer, you can improve natural air entrainment by keeping your mixing auger at approximately a 35-degree angle, taking good care of your wear blades, and allowing the material to blend in the bowl at a reasonable rate before augering it out. If there is more air needed in the mix, it’s very common for operators to employ admixtures designed specifically for trapping good air in concrete. Companies like Sika and Euclid Chemical make a range of products to use in your mix designs.

Tip 2: Optimize your Mix Designs

Mix designs are about more than just pure compressive strength. A mix design that can withstand frost should be 25 MPA (appx 4000 PSI) or higher. This number has less to do with strength in this context, and more to do with density. A denser mix has fewer water passageways going through it. This means that once the concrete has hardened, it’s less porous, and water cannot penetrate it as easily. When the frost comes, there’s less frozen saturation inside the concrete to freeze, which reduces the amount of expansion and contraction that happens. This greatly reduces frost cracking as well as “Scaling”, keeping the concrete looking new for years to come.

The final step is one of the most important. Use of vibrators is often necessary to improve workability and consistency. Over-vibration and tamping can allow the valuable air entrainment to leave the concrete. To avoid scaling and premature wear, the finishing method on the top layer matters most. Moisture underneath the pad before pouring helps create maximum density – wetting down the prepped pour area is a common practice. Once the concrete is down, do not work the bleed water back into the concrete, as it weakens the bond on the top layer. Ensure there is sufficient slope for the concrete to allow rainwater to run off quickly, as pooling and sitting water will also cause the top layer to break down.
